Chapter Three - Preparing Students to Understand Character
Understanding characters is key to understanding literature. This chapter goes into depth about how to teach our students to connect with characters in the books that they read. Teaching them to understand that characters are people too. Usually students will describe a character by noting surface descriptions but rarely do they know how to delve deeper into a character because they do not recognize them as a person. The chapter shares several questionnaires that can be given to students to help them begin to understand how to describe a character and how to identify with them as well. Using writing to expand their thoughts is another tool to help students become conscious about characters.

This sounds exactly like making an aesthetic connection with the text and the characters within it. I'm still a bit fuzzy on aesthetic reading, but it would seem to me like living in the text enough to make emotional connections with the characters would be exactly that. What are some of the questions that the book suggests? I would assume open ended questions? For these questions, do you think writing would be the best way to answer them, or talking in a discussion group?
